Description

December 31, 1967-In the fabled Ice Bowl, Green Bay's Bart Starr (#15) sneaks in for the winning touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys in the 1967 NFL Championship behind the blocking of teammate Jerry Kramer (#64) against Dallas' Jethro Pugh (#75) as the referee, in stripes, and a the spectacled bull Vince Lombardi look on. Jethro Pugh, his hands frostbitten for the rest of his life, would shoulder the blame for Starr's touchdown until the day he died in January 2015. Pugh went on to put in a brilliant 14-year career for the Cowboys, playing in two Super Bowls.

Chuck Murcein (#30) of Green Bay lifts his arms and seems to be signaling touchdown but is actually avoiding a potential penalty that would have come had he pushed Starr's body forward into the end zone.

The Packers defeated the Cowboys 21-17 in brutal weather conditions on a frozen Lambeau field and won their 3rd straight NFL Championship. They would also win their second consecutive Super Bowl in January 1968 against the Oakland Raiders.

The previous season the Green Bay Packers had beaten these same Dallas Cowboys in the 1966 NFL Championship in Dallas' Cotton Bowl Stadium and had then gone on to win Super Bowl I against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After the death of Vince Lombardi in 1970, the Super Bowl trophy was named after him.

The game of football on this day in 1967, with the minus-50 degree wind chill and ice-hardened field, compares to the brutality of war as figures similar to Picasso's Guernica (a mural about an aerial attack on a Basque town during the Spanish Civil War) move across the canvas.
